Only Favorite Contacts are Synced

To increase name recognition accuracy Mastermind only syncs starred contacts from your device. Alexa is giving some really random inputs on the name. If we try to match really random inputs to everybody in your contact book, it often comes way off. If we narrow it to a smaller subset, we have a better chance of getting it right (even though that is still very difficult).

To increase name recognition accuracy Mastermind only syncs starred contacts from your device.

Go to your Alexa App –> Settings –> View History and see what Alexa gives us when you lookup a contact.

Say “Alexa, Ask Mastermind to Lookup Contact.” while looking at the history screen in your Alexa app

Then say a name of a contact you may be having trouble with. You will be really surprised at what Alexa hears. Amazon tells us that it is our training data that needs to improve. There are millions of names in the world (and not just anglo names). So while we are trying our best to match really bad Alexa speech to text to a contact in your phonebook, it is not an easy problem to solve.

So for now, we are limiting ourselves to your favorites. We will play with other models as well, but for now, if you want to call/text somebody in Mastermind, please mark them as a favorite in your phonebook, re-sync from the Mastermind app settings if you need to (we do it automatically but not very frequently to not run down the battery), and then try texting/calling them.
